Gardening can be an excellent family bonding activity that children will enjoy. Most kids have a blast working in the garden, whether they’re pulling weeds or planting flowers. They love that they are allowed to get dirty and really enjoy getting dirty with their parents.

You can get new plants from root cuttings. Cut the roots in the winter, while they are dormant. The roots that should be cut are the biggest and thickest ones, use some hedge clippers or a sharp knife. Divide the roots into two inch lengths. Fill seed trays with grit and moist peat, and gently lay the cut roots on the surface. Cover it with a small layer of grit and peat. Store the seed tray in a cool area, and in approximately one month, your new seedlings will have started to sprout. Plant them individually in little pots until they’re ready to be placed outside.

You can use a mix of water and ammonia and spray them on snails. The mixture won’t hurt plants, and will convert to nitrogen, which is beneficial to gardens. It will kill the snails, though, and prevent them from damaging your plants. For maximum effect, spray the ammonia mixture on your garden every day.

You will need to properly lay sod. Before the sod can be laid, you should prepare the soil. Take out any weeds, then mix up the soil into a tilth that is fine. The next step is compacting your soil and carefully leveling it. Thoroughly moisten the soil. Lay the sod down in alternated rows, keeping the joints set off from one another. Firm the sod down to form a flat, even surface, and fill in any gaps between the sod with a little soil. Water the sod each day for two weeks so it will become well-rooted and ready for foot traffic.

Take advantage of the beautiful colors of fall. Before they finally shed their leaves in the fall, deciduous plants often put on one last show as their leaves turn shades of every color of the rainbow. Leaves change color because they are no longer producing chlorophyll. The natural pigmentation that was previously covered over by the green of the chlorophyll is finally allowed to show. Ensure your plants receive plenty of sunshine to increase the display of fall colors. Great choices include burning bush, barberry, chestnut, maple and boston ivy.

Broad-spectrum pesticide is not a good garden choice. In addition, these pesticides destroy the good insects which eat pests. Bugs that provide a benefit to your garden are more easily killed by these broad-spectrum pesticides, you may simply end up with a bigger pest problem. This can lead to needing even more pesticides to eliminate the problem insects.

Knee Pads

Knee pads are absolute miracle accessories if you work in a garden with plenty of low-growing plants. Spending lots of time on your knees while horticulture can injure them and create lasting pain. Your knees can get supported with a decent pair of horticulture knee pads.

When the fall season arrives, it is time to plant your fall edibles. Rather than using clay pots or planters for your lettuce and kale, plant them in a pumpkin! Scoop the insides out of the pumpkin, and don’t forget to spray the inside with Wilt-Pruf. This will prevent your pumpkin from rotting. When you finish this, you can plant!

You must do a bit of research, enjoy working outside a good deal of the time, and have lots of patience. However, while you watch something grow that you planted, the satisfaction will make it worthwhile.
